On the 24th February 2020 I was published by The Poetry Village and you can read my poem 'By my Hands' on their website.

I was notified last year that my poem had been selected and that it would be featured in February, so, it was a long time to wait to see it published online.

Here is an excerpt from their website ‘The Poetry Village features some of the most inspirational and exciting new poetry by both emerging and established writers’.

I'm really excited that my poem is published! The poem's theme is about a tree that's been cut down by someone that once loved to climb it as a child. So, it has an environmental message and also links to an emotional connection that we have as children with trees. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Did you spend time in green spaces as a child? Did you play near to or around trees, climb them, make treehouses? Has being an adult, led to you having less of a connection with nature and less of an interest in the preservation of trees?

As an eco-poet, I’m passionate about preserving and protecting trees due to the vital roles that they play for our existence, our environment and our enjoyment. I was very fortunate to spend a lot of time out in nature as a child, which I’ve continued into adulthood. Sadly, it seems that trees are increasingly seen as unwanted in our urban and suburban spaces and home gardens and are cut down for vanity reasons. Local councils in the UK have decimated tree levels in towns and cities. Trees play a vital part in our lives in so many ways but the disconnect in awareness from childhood to adulthood is a route cause for adults in not taking an active interest or action to protect trees.

Aside from the obvious benefits of creating clean air for life on earth, trees are wonderful water controllers and can reduce flooding. They are also essential for healthy soil and give space for insects and wildlife to exist. Their roots act as networks under the soil and research is being undertaken into how trees communicate with each other and also other plants in their vicinity.

We have a romanticised view of trees, mainly drawn from our childhood memories of them but much more must be done to ensure that trees are properly protected, as well as mass replanting schemes across the UK and across the globe.

The next time you pass a tree in your street, in a local park or out in the wilderness, take some time to study it and appreciate it.
